Arverne
Piping Plover Nesting Area
Rockaway, Queens
The Arverne Piping Plover Site
was established in 1996. The site also contains a colony of nesting Least
Terns, as well as a small number of nesting Oystercatchers. The City of New
York, Department of Parks & Recreation’s Urban Park Rangers maintains
the area. 1997 was the first year that the New York City Urban Park Rangers
worked at the site on a full time basis. The rangers patrol and monitor the
site and plan to eventually do some habitat enhancement.
The nesting area starts at Beach
45th Street and runs to Beach 56th Street. The Plover nesting season begins in
mid-March and extends to the end of August.
Birders are welcome to visit the
site. The rangers conduct public tours on Saturdays. It is imperative that
people do not disturb the birds while they are nesting.
The Arverne Piping Plover Site
can be reach by taking the "A" train and getting off at the B44th
station. The site is clearly marked at the boardwalk.
