Subject: Nickerson Beach: Large flocks of Terns, Skimmers and Oystercatchers

Yesterday, 12 August, my friend Bob Horton and I spent a productive afternoon
at Jamaica Bay rewarded with views of Marbled and Hudsonian Godwits as well as
the many other shorebirds described in earlier posts.
Not wishing to battle commuting traffic back to New Jersey we headed east to
the barriers islands.
At the tip of Long Beach we explored the deserted Nickerson Beach from 7:00 to
8:00pm and we're amazed at the huge flocks of birds on the beach: 300+ Black
Skimmers with many juveniles: 250+ common Terns with two Black Terns and two
Roseate Terns (one banded); 275+American Oystercatchers; and an assortment of
gulls mostly Great Black-backed. It was an incredible site and we had no
traffic issues returning to NJ.
